Forklift Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety procedures must always be followed when somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is essential for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothes from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the station must not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed in the vicinity of a charging area and battery. Never allow items such as matches or lighters to be used while an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
